Glam Day

Girls Ministry, First Baptist Church Atlanta

Atlanta, GA

Let’s be honest, girl’s love being pampered.  So, doing girl events that include things like manicures, makeovers or facials is kind of a no brainer.  The challenging part is to move beyond makeovers and fingernail polish and take responsibility for investing truth in their lives.  Any one of us could throw a killer manicure party, but what would the girls leave with –besides perfect nails?   That’s the question that is always on my heart.  We don’t have much time with these girls and as leaders we will be held accountable someday for what we do –and for what we don’t do – with our time with them.  So how do you turn a “get pampered” day into something that will encourage and sharpen them spiritually?  The Lord’s answer to me was “Glam Day.”

Glam Day is what you would get if you put a day at the spa, a stretching class at the gym, a prayer labyrinth, and a worship service, in a blender and turned it on “mix till creamy.”  Our tag line for Glam Day was “A spiritual journey that will relax your body and refresh your Spirit” and that’s exactly what it was.

Here are the Glam Day basics:

•Turn your Sunday school class rooms (or multiple rooms at your church) into designated “rooms on the journey”

•Have a “Room Leader” in each room who is responsible for running/overseeing each room.

•Interchange the rooms.

i.e.  Prayer room, massage room, worship room, facial, repose, pedicures

•Room décor consisted of items for “summer fun” I found at hobby lobby, things like wooden umbrellas, Chinese lanterns (hang able paper lanterns), placemats that turned into wall art, bamboo placemats that when hung from the ceiling with fishing wire gave a very “spa” feel … etc.

Room Details:

•Repose

Ok, ok, it was kinda like yoga minus all the new age stuff, plus scriptural truth and stretching.  It was really cool.  In a large room, we spread out towels (we didn’t have that many mats) and put a water bottle at each “station.”  The leader of the group lead the girls in stretches while speaking scripture and truth over them.  There was worship music playing in the background.

•Facials

This room had chairs and long tables surrounding the edges of the room.  At each chair/station there was a bowl of hot water on the table, along with a dry hand towl, sample size amounts of exfoliates, cleanser, lotions and other things to be used during a facial.   The girl who was the “room leader” does make-overs and facials as a side business, so she knew what to do and what supplies were  needed.  The bowls were dumped and cleaned in-between “room changes.”

•Prayer

This was a lamp-lit room with pillows, bean bags, rugs and “prayer stations.”   For our girls we did the progression of repentance, praise, petition, thanksgiving and intercession.   Each of those words was a station where slips of paper contained scripture talking about the pertaining word.  The girls were encouraged by the room leader to spend time at each station.

•Massages

We stuck with “shoulder rubs” for this room.  The girls gave them and got them, trading off spots.  As they were rubbing each other’s shoulders, the room leader spoke truth from scripture about God being our comfort in time of need, our shelter from the storm, our hope and healer.

•Worship

This was a neat room.  We had a girl playing acoustic guitar in this room.  The girls came in and were invited to worship through song.   There were also stations around the room facilitating other kinds of worship.  An example of one of those stations would be: we taped aluminum foil up on a large portion of the bottom of one of the walls and left markers on the floor in front of this spot. This was a spot for the girls to write out a declaration of the goodness, the greatness of God they had experienced in their lives.

•Manicures

I know, the flyer said pedicures.  However, after the last minute cancellation from the ladies at the local beauty school who were supposed to come and do the pedies, it turned into manicures by our adult ladies … which the girls loved equally as much!   Ministry events always throw curve balls, I know you know what I am talking about!  It’s funny how God always works these together for the best.  I went and bought manicure sets and we had skinny long tables with white paper table clothes on them and chairs on either side.  Each station had a bowl of warm water, fingernail polish remover and a manicure kit.   All while the leaders were doing each girls nails, they were getting to know the girls, talking about Christ and offering truth and hope in a personalized way.  MANY leaders had stories of praying with and offering timely encouragement and exhortation to the girls.  And to think for a few minutes I was frustrated that beauty school girls (who may or may not have known Christ) were not going to come do pedicures.  I am so thankful God turns our best efforts into something supernatural … in spite of us sometimes!
