What kind of messages are we sending girls today? I question that in myself sometimes. I show examples, and tell stories of people who were faithful to Christ and then “big” things resulted. These are encouraging, inspiring stories that should be shared.
But what about the small victories? How often do I share that faithfulness will often result in, well…. results that are sometimes hard to see. At least as far as our “bigger is better” world would conclude. Success to us is often defined by big numbers: followers, members, likes, dollars…. or immediate results for our efforts.
Are we praying big prayers because we simply want big things to happen in our lives and ministries, or because we want God to be made much of? I see that even in my own life. When a girl I disciple has little visible progress, I begin to question myself and my effectiveness, rather than resting in God and His timing.
Should we pray big prayers that desire for Him to be glorified – absolutely. Should we have faith that He can do what He says – we better. I love how Eugene Peterson titled his book on the discipleship process A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, because that is how it feels to me. Sometimes we get turned around, and need to be pointed back in the right direction, sometimes we want instant results rather than continuing faithfully and trusting the results will come. May our loving Father help us remember that success isn’t necessarily marked by the “fast results” or the “bigger is better”, but rather in those small, daily steps of obedience. Because it is then – walking in daily faithfulness – that our God likes to show up in BIG ways!
