You Know You’re a Girls Minister When...(Part 2!)

Susan Briggs
You Know You’re a Girls Minister When... You borrowed The Hunger Games from a 9th grade girl so you’d be in the know about tracker-jackers, the Mockingjay, living in some place called Panem, and the heated debate between Team Peeta and Team Gale. You text faster than anyone you know. You get most of your fashion advice from teenagers. You totally saw the jeggings trend coming... You listen to One Direction...and you maybe kinda like ‘em. Your best friend has a baby girl and you think, “I can’t wait ‘til she’s in the girls ...

Do What It Says! Knowledge Applied

Ashley Cunningham
During our current quarter, my students and I have been studying the book of James. So far the study has been pretty challenging - not only for the students but for myself as well. The book of James has so much in it and studying the book verse by verse has been fun. The students and I have been searching for pieces of gold to take home with us each week and apply to our lives. This week are focusing on James 3:13-18. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of ...

Girls' Ministry Launch Party from Start to Finish

Susan Briggs
Last year, Delight Girls Ministry had the great joy and responsibility of launching an entire ministry geared specifically toward teenage girls in 6th-12th grades.  I dreamed for years about what a girls' ministry might look like in my local church and spent all summer planning and recruiting a lead team to help launch when school started last Fall.  Launching a girls' ministry is no small under-taking, but it absolutely can be done by anyone who is called by God and passionate about ministering to teenage girls and their families. There ...

You Know You're a Girls Minister When...

Suzanne Rowe
You know you’re a Girls Minister When…. You find yourself using text lingo like “lol” and “idk” to people other than teenagers. You can justify seeing the Justin Bieber movie for ministry purposes. You use the color pink…a lot. You average about 17 exclamation marks in any given text, tweet, or email. You wear jeans and flip flops to work. The rest of your Student Ministry Staff regularly vetos your youth-wide event ideas for being “too girlie”. You schedule your pedicures around church camps and mission trips. You've ever had ...

Bigger is Better?

Staci Capps
What kind of messages are we sending girls today?  I question that in myself sometimes.  I show examples, and tell stories of people who were faithful to Christ and then “big” things resulted.  These are encouraging, inspiring stories that should be shared. But what about the small victories?  How often do I share that faithfulness will often result in, well…. results that are sometimes hard to see.  At least as far as our “bigger is better” world would conclude.  Success to us is often defined by big numbers: followers, members, likes, ...

Silence & Solitude – A Guided Prayer Retreat for Girls

Suzanne Rowe
Last October, I attend the LifeWay Girls Ministers Retreat. I went fully expecting a time full of laughter, tears, and most of all idea sharing! However, when I got there, I quickly found that wasn’t the plan…instead a guided prayer retreat had been set up for us. I was so tired, weary, and overwhelmed with the constant go, go, go of ministry that I realized I hadn’t stopped like this in a long while.  I have participated in lengthy prayer retreats before and know the richness of them, but to be honest, I found myself terrified about this ...

Oh, Relationships!

Susan Briggs
Five years ago, I spent one of the best summers of my life as a girls' ministry intern.  I was encouraged by my boss to look for three girls to really pour my life into and disciple for those short few months.  That was some of the best advice I could have ever been given, because I could have easily burned out had I tried to personally invest in each and every girl in the ministry.  One 15-year-old girl, Rosemary, captured my attention as I looked for someone who was teachable and ready to take her relationship with the Lord to a ...

Hold on to Your Pants!

Ashley Cunningham
Have you ever been “pantsed”? You read that right, pantsed. You’re just standing around and next thing you know… whoosh! There went your pants. Someone has taken it upon themselves to grab your britches and pull them down. I mean, I don’t know about you but I definitely don’t need help in that department, thank you! When I lived in Nashville our student ministry had a fun weekend to kick off each new school year. It was similar to a Disciple Now retreat but the main goal was to get to know the small group of students that we would be ...

February's Bonus Event Idea

Laura Reynolds
Do you believe you are called as a girls minister to serve as the primary female role model for girls in your ministry?  I don’t!  I think it should be their moms.  But I do believe part of your role is to connect moms and daughters and strengthen their relationships.  After all, you see them for maybe 2 or 3 hours a week max.  Their moms see them everyday.  Your role is significant for a few years, but mom’s (hopefully) lasts a lifetime.  (Yes, I know we all have girls in our ministries who don’t have godly moms.  And yes, you do have a ...

Pretty Little Liars: Bringing Truth to Teenage Girls

Susan Briggs
The Secret Life of the American Teenager.  Pretty Little Liars.  The Lying Game.  These are just a few of the television shows I hear mentioned on a regular basis as I do life with girls in small groups, Bible studies, coffee dates, and school lunches.  While I do not follow any of these shows on a regular basis, I do tune in sometimes to see what the girls are exposing themselves to and so that I can engage in conversation about what they're watching. If you work with teenage girls, it is so important to know what they're watching, ...

Right Here, Right Now HE Loves Me

Suzanne Rowe
Right here, right now…this is where I am. I’m not living in my future dreams, or changing any part of my past days. I’m here. Now. In the Present. And so is my God. Nothing about today surprises Him. Further, as I seek Him, obey Him, and love Him, I can be confident of this: He has me right where He wants me. If I were supposed to be doing anything else, He would have led me there or would be leading me there now. He holds that power. But for today, I am HERE, and that is right where I am supposed to be. I think we can oh so quickly become ...

Dancing Through Life

Ashley Cunningham
From dancing while getting ready with my roommate, to the personal concerts I hold in my car, this girl loves to dance. Actually, I have a signature dance face and move. I poke out my lips real far and bring my arms up to my chest. It looks a little something like this: Oh yeah. This picture was taken several years ago but I still make that same face when I’m feelin’ funky. I was at lunch with a group of girls the other day and a quick glance around the table proved that each girl had her own dance style. We each were bobbing our heads ...

I listen to Justin Bieber music.... and I like it

Staci Capps
Yes, you read the title correctly.  I am a girls minister, and a wife, and a mom (of a teenage son no less), and I like Justin Bieber music.  Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not in the crazy, life size cutout of Justin in my room kind of like, but I admit he is on my playlist. I can blame it on my job.  I need to be “culturally relevant” and at least have a working knowledge of the things my girls are interested in.  I can say the same thing about the “Twilight” books and movies.  Yes, I read them because it was all the girls were talking ...

New Blog Team

Laura Reynolds
We are so excited to announce our new girlsministry.net blog team! Four incredible ladies are joining our team to offer fresh insight into the world of girls ministry.  Each of them is in the “trenches” - daily ministering to girls.  We can’t wait for you to begin hearing from them!  So without further ado…   Susan Briggs Susan Briggs has worked in Girls Ministry for as long as she can remember, and saw a lifelong desire of her heart come to fruition when God opened the door to launch Delight Girls Ministry in September 2011.  She is ...
