Today’s Impact on Tomorrow/Twenty Years From Now

What will be popular for girls in 20 years? When I was a teenage girl, I never dreamed such things Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace would be “in” for girls today. And I’m sure girls today (much less those of us who work with them) can fathom what’s to come. What’s more, I’m certain girls don’t understand future implications of their actions on such social media sites today.

In a recent Forbes magazine article, the CEO of Google pointed out that “Twenty or thirty years from now a U.S. President will have a public record of photos and data that includes a lot of boyfriends or girlfriends and parties and so on.” We need to remind girls that the things they post on the World Wide Web will have an impact on their lives beyond middle school and high school. And more than that, they are publicly declaring something about themselves and the God they serve that will forever be attached to their name.

Suzanne Rowe, a girls minister in Cleveland, TN, encouraged her girls earlier this summer about pictures they post online and helped them see that the issue is about something much deeper than outward actions. Check out her challenge here. Girls need to hear truth on this matter that doesn’t stem from legalism but a desire to glorify the King! Thank you Suzanne for tackling a delicate but important issue with your girls. You are an encouragement and example for the rest of us. May we all take up the challenge to encourage girls to glorify God in all things and build character today that will afford them a godly witness in the future!

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15 ESV
